Student Exchange

100K Strong Project

.

The purpose of this project was to build capacity in future built environments professionals around green infrastructure strategies to increase resilience against heat and flooding. Green infrastructure shows promise in alleviating some of the climate change impacts, particularly in hot and arid climates.

.

We partnered with colleagues from the Universidad de Sonora to conduct this academic exchange between students and faculty. The team from Universidad de Sonora visited us in Tucson, learned about green infrastructure theory and practices, and visited some of the sites in town at various scales. Then, our University of Arizona team visited them in Hermosillo, where we also visited sites and worked together to develop landscape designs for a conservation area – the Cerro Johnson. It was a very rewarding experience!

.

The project’s full title is: “Green Infrastructure in Hot Dry Climates: An Educational Endeavor in Urban Spaces Facing Vulnerability”. It was funded by the 100 K Strong in the Americas (100K), Innovation Fund at Partner of the Americas, and the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Support was provided by the Coca-Cola Foundation Mexico, Sempra Energy, and the Jenkins Foundation. The project duration was from September 2021 to May 2022.
